After nearly a decade of determined effort to improve environmental awareness and the national commitment to sustainable development in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, the ONE T&T Campaign was born out the mind of Steven Greenleaf, with crucial input from Mrs. Denecia Grant, and Dr. Sam Ham, founding members of the Board of Advisers of Greenleaf Education Costa Rica. Steven fought long and hard to convince the political powers of the need for increased environmental education of the general public and in his capacity as Technical Adviser to the Minister of Legal Affairs was able to bring the ONE T&T campaign to the people of Trinidad and Tobago.
ONE T&T was a behavior change campaign which set out to educate the general public of Trinidad and Tobago on ways to conserve energy, water, and other natural resources, while making healthier and more informed decisions about the products they buy and the way they live. Promoting awareness of the value of a healthy environment and the valuable services that natural capital provide was an important theme of the campaign as well. Making the environment relevant and meaningful in new ways can be a real communications challenge and is part of the reason that Greenleaf Education Costa Rica emphasizes communications skills in all our classes.
The program was championed in the Cabinet of Trinidad and Tobago by Minister Prakash Ramadhar and over the more than two years of its life campaign staff reached out to more than fifty thousand citizens, from government employees, to private sector businesses, students from elementary school to university level, civil society organizations, and the general public. The team used specially equipped vans to travel the nation carrying out direct interpretive outreach programs.
